Government Drug Assistance Programs
 

State and federal governments provide a variety of healthcare and prescription drug assistance programs. Information about the some of the available programs are listed below:

Medicare
Medicare Part D prescription drug benefits were effective January 1, 2006. Additional information is available at www.Medicare.gov

Medicaid
Medicaid is a federal/state health insurance program for low-income individuals and families. Eligibility requirements and benefits vary by state although all states offer some prescription drug benefits for eligible patients.

State Children’s Health Insurance Programs
State Children's Health Insurance Programs (SCHIPs) provide health insurance to eligible uninsured children. Eligibility requirements and benefits vary by state. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administers SCHIPs.

AIDS Drug Assistance Programs
State AIDS Drug Assistance Programs (ADAPs) provide free prescription drugs to eligible low-income individuals with HIV and AIDS. Each state ADAP has its own rules and benefits. Additional information is available. The Access Project offers information about state ADAPs.

Other State Drug Assistance Programs
Many states offer other prescription drug assistance programs. The National Conference of State Legislatures website contains useful information about available programs.
